Game Design & 3 Tips To Help Students

By Robert Sutter

One of the most noticeable types of art these days is game design and there are many reasons for it. Not only is gaming, in general, one of the most popular hobbies but it clear that more and more companies require designers in order for the best products to come about. If you are looking to become a game designer, there are a number of tips that are worth taking into consideration. Here is a list of 3 of the most helpful points that budding designers should keep in mind.

1. Never follow the crowd. With annualized franchises like Call of Duty being so prevalent, it is easy to fall into the trap of following the leader. It is clear that certain genres are able to make the most money but one of the other traits that series have, which newcomers in this field do not possess, is name recognition. As a budding designer, you have to build your own identity and what this means is that your creativity has to shine. Do not be afraid to deviate from what is popular.

2. It is important to understand that science is needed in order for this particular art to excel. Game design is meant to be a creative platform and I do not think that anyone can argue with such a point. With that said, science is needed as well since game design is done through computers. The understanding of such elements as coding is integral in order for games to be created. If such a level of understanding is not seen, games are ideas and nothing more.

3. Keep up-to-date with the news in the gaming industry. This goes for just about any field of work but given the fact that the video game business is one of the most rapidly-changing realms of work out there, stories are likely to crop up at a moment's notice. As a result, you have to stay up-to-date. You have to understand what is current so that you may be able to tailor your projects better. The learning experience, as you can see, does not end once you attain your degree.

Hopefully these points have given you a better understanding of what is needed from you in the realm of game design. It is clear that there is a lot of work that goes into this level of art but it is a challenge that is more than worth tackling. After all, most students in this field are ones who have grown up with gaming and want to be able to etch their own mark in the industry as well. These tips will be able to help budding designers along the way.
