Car Wraps: Where Does Smell Come Into Marketing?

When it comes to the traditional methods of marketing, it's safe to say that sight is the one sense that is focused on more than any other. Car wraps, for example, are designed to be eye-catching and the designs set in place are made to be some of the sharpest that can be imagined. That being said, what if I were to tell you that the sense of smell could be implemented in marketing? It sounds hard to believe but it seems as though this is very much rooted in reality.

Authorities along the lines of JMR Graphics can focus on this point, especially when it seems as though a unique sense is brought into the picture. An article on the Drum said that McCain Potatoes unveiled a potato-scented taxi for the sake of marketing. Now, it goes without saying that car wraps in general are quite effective for the sake of advertising in the long term. However, the idea of smell coming into play alongside sight is one that, in my mind, has to be read about in order to be believed.

You may be curious as to what the objective of this particular taxi is apart from marketing that was spoken about before. The article went into detail about how the taxi would move about in different areas, ranging from York to London, meaning that there is quite an audience to consider. People in the areas listed in the report can be given rides in the cab, where the smell of oven baked jacket potato would be picked up on. It is clear that McCain Potatoes has a unique concept on hand.

When you go about marketing in the long term, you want to make sure that you are unique from the competition. You want to go about a certain action that is able to stand out from everyone else, which is why I feel like incorporating scents is perhaps one of the most unique. The idea of scent is one that can prove to be rather potent, in more than ways than one, at that. McCain Potatoes has a strong idea set in place and I believe it can breed results.

I couldn't help but liken this method to the Chocolate World Tour from Hersheypark. This ride would bring you through the various stages of the chocolate-making process but throughout the ride, the passengers can pick up on the scent of said chocolate as well. It's easy to draw a comparison to McCain Potatoes, especially when it seems as though very few brands are able to bring more than the sense of sight into effect. If nothing else, I believe that this can be looked back on as a remarkable experiment.
