Why You Might Need A Reverse Phone Number Lookup For Free

By Jayne Rutledge

There are many reasons why someone might want to look up someone else's telephone number. When you know the name of the person but do not have their seven digits, this process is fairly simple. However, it is harder when you have the information switched; someone has been calling you, and you have no idea who it is. In this case, you will probably want to use a reverse phone number lookup for free.

These websites will give useful information such as the city or town from which the caller is calling, and sometimes they will tell you whether it is an individual or a business. You may have to pay a fee for the actual name, however.

The good news is, even when you cannot get further information from the service, sometimes there are other options. The website may include a message board where people can post information about the number in question. If that is not the case, try looking further. Someone may have posted this information somewhere else.

There are a few different scenarios where this type of information can be useful. Here are a few of them:

1. You are being hounded by debt collectors. Anyone who has been in this situation knows how stressful it is. Debt collectors can be relentless in their pursuits. The original creditor may have sold your account to a scavenger agency because it got too old. Then, the scavenger agency tries to trick you into answering the phone and admitting to the debt, so that they can get you on record and reestablish the statute of limitations on your debt. Then, they can legally pursue you for longer than they could have if you had not acknowledged the debt.

2. You are the victim of the locksmith scam. This sounds made up, but it happens more often than you would think: a shady "locksmith" advertises their services, especially for emergencies. When you find yourself locked out of you home or car, you call them. They show up, either pick or break your locks, and claim that you owe them insane amounts of money, like $500 or $600 for a job that should cost $100 at the most. They take the money you have, and your information, and they call you over and over demanding the money. You will want to know the number so that you can avoid their calls. You also may be able to gain information that could help you report them to the Better Business Bureau.

3. Ex boyfriend or girlfriend. You have removed this person from your phone. When they call, you think you recognize the contact, but you are not sure. Before answering, you want to know who the caller is, so that you can either avoid your ex or prepare yourself for the conversation that may take place. The last thing you want to is to be caught off guard and answer the call, winding up flustered because you did not realize it would be your ex.

These are a few of the scenarios in which a reverse phone number lookup for free might be helpful. When you know who the caller is, you are much more in control of the situation. Be aware, and remember that harassment is a crime, whether on the telephone or in person.
