Microbiology LIMS, Can You Trust Home Testing?

By Patricia Reynolds

H2O is life! Your body is made up of it and it is a part of the fruits and vegetables you grow. Not only that, you use it for almost everything in your life. From washing your clothes and household items to using it to prepare food for your family. In some areas according to Microbiology LIMS, it can be contaminated, that is why convenient bacteria water testing is essential. Some people don t have clean water to utilize and that results in many infections and illnesses.

There are many illnesses you could pick up from drinking contaminated H2O. These are the following, Salmonella, Cholera, Dysentery, E. Coli, Typhoid Fever and many more. A person can get these waterborne diseases not just through drinking it. Eating food that has been prepared with the contaminated liquid is also another way. You have to be vigilant and very cautious of the H20 you drink.

The H2O fresh from the ground is not the problem here, the real issue comes in through the surface. E. Coli also called Escherichia coli is present in sewage and animal waste, found in intestines of human being and animals. Not something that should be taken lightly, it may not affect you right away. However, in time this can turn into a very ugly disease.

If you find yourself in a jam because you are thirsty however you suspect that there might be something off with the H2O. The normal and smart thing to do is to take a sample and send it to a certified laboratory for analyzing. It may be a while until you are able to drink from your well again. Regardless of how tiny you think the problem might be, you must act.

Taking a sample and sending it to the lab can take a while. It can also take forever until you hear if the sample has coliforms. In this case, it is better to get yourself a home kit, this way you won t be waiting for anyone you will know right then. The one that is good on the market is Bacteria EZ Cult 24 hour presence/ Absence of total coliforms. This kit will change the color of the water if it detects something bad.

The kit works in the following way: the coliform infected H2O will look blue underneath the UV light, the one without remains clear. To get the H2O properly checked you need to purchase the kit with a UV light. They are bought separately and do not come bundled up. Fortunately, they are both quite affordable, how much money you save will also depend on where they are bought. Expect to pay $14 for the kit and $8 for the light.

In the event of a flood, you must check your well for coliforms. On a regular day, it might be squeaky clean. However, floods bring about other dirty water from all over. If you find yourself in that situation you need to check your water before you use it. Coliforms grow so you shouldn t wait too long to clean it. You also can t keep cleaning without finding a way for the source.

Infected H2O is not something to be taken lightly, you survival depends on it. If you are not feeling okay or your streams seems a little strange. Get medical help and have your stream checked and cleared.
