If you are thinking of basic clerical work and such, then you can always get an entry level model at around 300 dollars or so. Many companies compete at this level of entry level computing and you will be spoilt for choice as to which one is the best for you. Read reviews and forum posts if you are at a lost for which is the best for you.

Always purchase from a respectable brand, and a brand that has proven itself in terms of longevity and quality. A good branded computer will last you at least three before you replace it. Also choose a brand that has good customer services networks.

Since you will be buying computer to help you in your business, it is never a good idea to play games on a business computer, even though it is capable of doing so. This is because certain games will affect settings and such on the hard drives and can affect programs. If you want to play games, buy a separate computer for that.
